Music has always been an important part of Barbara's life. As a girl growing up in the village of Baltimore, Ontario, she sang in the choir at Baltimore United Church. While attending high school in the nearby town of Cobourg, her interest in music continued — playing clarinet in the school band, singing in the school choir, and also singing with a small folk group. As a nursing student at Kingston General Hospital, she began to gain experience as a choir leader by directing the student nursing choir.
After graduating from KGH, Barbara married, and worked as a nurse in several different capacities, all the while continuing her involvement with music. Over the years, she has been alto section lead in several church choirs, has taken voice lessons, and has sung with a variety of choirs including the Cobourg Opera Guild, the Algoma Festival Choir, the Canadian Centennial Choir and Opera Lyra Ottawa. She currently performs with the Cantata Singers of Ottawa.c
Barbara joined Barrhaven United Church in 1983, and has been involved with many aspects of church life, both musical and non-musical. Over the years, she has directed the junior and intermediate choirs, as well as two musicals at the church. In addition, she helped found and co-direct a CGIT group at BUC.
Barbara became the director of the senior choir at Barrhaven United Church in 2000. She enjoys working with the members of the senior choir, and shares their enthusiasm for and commitment to making music a meaningful part of worship.
New senior choir members are always welcome. Barbara can be reached by contacting the church office.
